The Best Kind of Coaching for the Woman Who’s Tired of Feeling “Fine”
If you’re reading this, we’re already friends
If your Google or ChatGPT search led you here at 10pm, I already know a few things about you.
You look like you have it together. You have a good job, solid relationships, you’re capable and responsible. From the outside, nobody would guess anything's wrong.
But inside, you're exhausted — not from your to-do list, but from constantly managing how you show up for everyone else. You've tried to change it. Said no once. Spoke up in a meeting. Asked for what you actually wanted. And then the guilt hit so hard you took it back.
So you're stuck in a loop: half-trying, half-retreating, getting more tired of your own pattern every time it repeats.
Here's the honest truth: not every coach is built for this problem. A lot of coaching out there is either shame-based ("you should be further along by now") or surface-level ("just stop caring what people think!" — as if that's ever worked for anyone). If you're looking for the right kind of support, here's what to actually look for, and why I built my practice around it.
What to look for in a coach for help with this specific feeling
Someone who treats boundaries as self-respect, not rebellion. You don't need to be angrier or push people away. You need boundaries that come from knowing your own worth — ones that feel fair to hold, not like a wall you're putting up out of resentment.
Someone who makes room for how hard this actually is. If a coach's whole approach is "just decide to be different," that's not coaching — and it’s not practical. Real change is slow, nonlinear, and often comes with a lot of emotions, so it should feel safe to talk about it.
Someone who doesn't sell you a personality flaw. You're not "too sensitive" or "not confident enough." You were never taught how to do this. That distinction matters, because one story keeps you stuck and the other one doesn't.
Someone who can name your specific loop. Watching and waiting for someone to notice what you need. Feeling like a fraud who has it together on the outside and is unraveling on the inside. Saying no, spiraling, and retracting it. If a coach can describe your exact pattern back to you, that's a good sign they've actually worked with women like you before — not just women in general.
How I help with this
I'm Valerie Marston, and this is the entire focus of my practice: high-achieving women who are exhausted from managing everyone else's needs at the expense of their own.
My coaching isn't about becoming a different, less caring person. It's about closing the gap between who you are on the inside and who you let yourself be out in the world. The shift I work toward with clients isn't "stop caring about people" — it's stop making their comfort more important than your own.
Concretely, that looks like:
Setting boundaries that come from self-respect, not from anxiety or guilt you've been swallowing for months
Making decisions — about dinner, a raise, a relationship — without needing everyone else's buy-in first
Having the hard conversation without rehearsing it in your head for three days and then replaying it over and over
Leaving conversations feeling energized instead of drained, because you stopped performing and started showing up as you
The first real sign of progress isn't dramatic. It's small: you say no, the guilt shows up like it always does, but this time it doesn't take over. You sit with it, survive it, and then start to trust yourself to handle more and more. That's the foundation of it all, and I’m with you every step of the way.
What you won’t find here
Just so you know what you're not getting: I don't do "just stop caring what people think" or “just fake it til you make it” as advice.
I don't offer mindset shifts that won’t hold up under real pressure.
I don't use shame as a motivator (on the contrary, I work with you to help you understand and lean on your own source of motivation).
And I don't coach in a way that simply tells you what to do - I help you decide what’s best for your life and understand exactly how to integrate it for good.
If this is you…
If you're tired of feeling small, exhausted from listening to everyone else’s opinion rather than trusting your own, and ready to take up the space you've always deserved without waiting for permission — this is exactly who I built my practice for.
